Join the International Tennis Hall of Fame, National Archives, and National Archives Foundation in Newport on Monday, Feb. 27 for an inspiring evening with Professor Ashley Brown, author and historian, as she discusses the life, legacy and accomplishments of Hall of Famer Althea Gibson.

Explore the museum and enjoy beverages and hors d'oeuvres prior to the event with a ticket purchase. Following the discussion, Professor Brown will greet guests and sign copies of her new comprehensive biography, entitled Serving Herself: The Life and Times of Althea Gibson.

For those unable to attend in person, the event will be streamed by the National Archives. Register to watch program virtually.

About Professor Ashley Brown

Ashley Brown is an assistant professor and the Allan H. Selig Chair in Sport and Society in U.S. History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she teaches such courses as Sport, Recreation, and Society; African Americans and Sports; Biography in U.S. Sports History; and History, Sport, and Film. She earned her Ph.D. in American Studies at George Washington University.

Professor Brown’s article “Swinging for the State Department: American Women Tennis Players in Diplomatic Goodwill Tours, 1941-1959” was honored by the North American Society for Sport History in 2015 and was subsequently published in the Journal of Sport History. The Journal of African American History has also published her scholarship.
