About the Collection

How large is the Museum and its collections?
The International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum is the only museum in the world dedicated to preserving the history of the sport of tennis, played by millions of people around the world. With over 25,000 objects, extensive photographic and audiovisual collections, and 243 Hall of Famers, we tell the story of an exciting and historic sport and the people who play it best. The museum in housed in the historic Newport Casino building and sits on a 7 acre site.

Why are some objects not on exhibition?
Some objects are not on exhibition because they are too fragile to be exposed to light and different temperatures, some are not on display because they don’t fit into the narrative that the Museum is trying to tell at the moment, and some are not on display because we think that they have been on display for too long, and we want to give them a rest. We also try to keep exhibits new and exciting for our visitors.

What is meant by the term “temporary exhibition”?
Every year, the Museum puts on a new exhibit about a different facet of tennis history. Previous exhibits have had topics like Tennis and the Titanic, Hollywood, and photography. These exhibits draw from the Museum’s permanent collection as well as loaned items, and are typically on view for a year. There is also a display in the museum of recently acquired items that is changed out several times a year.

What are the current special exhibitions at the Museum?
Our new temporary exhibit, “The Fan Experience” is a celebration of what makes going to tennis matches so exciting. Featuring pictures and objects from the permanent, the exhibit takes the viewer through the experience of attending a tournament, from entering the stadium to getting autographs.

Can you tell me the value of something that I own?
The staff of the Museum are unable to provide values for objects, but are able to provide a list of appraisers who may be able to help. Email to get the name of an appraiser.

How can I donate something to the Museum?
The museum has limited space, and can only take the items that we can store and display. In order to discuss donation, please contact Nicole Markham, our Curator of Collections at or at (401) 849-3990.
