Bounding onto the hard courts in New York as a 16-year-old out of Baltimore, Pam Shriver struck a strong emotional chord with the American public by reaching the 1978 US Open Singles final. From that point forward, she established herself as a front-line player who understood percentage tennis as well as anyone. She attacked the net with unwavering persistence. Shriver was one of the greatest doubles players of all time, winning 20 majors with Martina Navratilova, with whom she garnered a Grand Slam in 1984. They were the first female partnership to realize that feat.
