When Ilie Nastase was playing his brand of tennis in full flow, when he was demonstrating his shotmaking wizardry and his astonishing speed and athleticism, there was no more joyous sight in tennis. To be sure, Nastase had to battle his share of demons, and frequently he found himself at the center of controversy with umpires and linesmen. The fact remained that he was a singularly gifted player, the first man to truly master the topspin lob off both sides, a virtuoso performer. He was in some ways an unfulfilled player, but ever evocative and compelling.
