Curator's Corner: Alex Olmedo's Winning Spikes

Originally from Peru, Hall of Famer Alex Olmedo was an unlikely US Davis Cup hero. However, thanks to the support of tennis industry leader Perry Jones, the longtime California resident was appointed to the US squad, and went on to lead the Americans to cherished victory. Olmedo won three points in the 1958 final to win the Cup back from the Australians after a three-year streak. The final in Brisbane was wrought with wet conditions, but Olmedo battled through, finding success with the support of these tennis spikes – which are now carefully preserved and displayed at the Hall of Fame.

Alex Olmedo presented with Hall of Fame Ring at Los Angeles Tennis Club

During the summer of 1987, Alex Olmedo stood next to Stan Smith when they were both inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame as members of the same induction class. On Friday, December 8, 2017, the duo once again shared the stage at the Los Angeles Tennis Club when Smith presented Olmedo with his official Hall of Fame Ring during a special evening at the historic tennis club.
