Newport Draw Party - Top Pros Mingle with Great Fans and Set the Draw!
NEWPORT, R.I. -- As Wimbledon winds down, grass court tennis moves to the United States to kick off the ATP World Tour summer swing, with the first stop being the historic grass courts of the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island. On Saturday, July 3, some of the field's most exciting players including No. 4 American John Isner, the youngest player in the world top-100, Grigor Dimitrov, and and 2010 Newport quarterfinalist Ryan Harrison.
Tournament Director Mark Stennind and Newport Mayor Stephen Waluk kicked things off before turning the Van Alen Cup to No. 1 seed John Isner to make the first draw. Isner will face Karol Beck of Slovakia.
Next up Ryan Harrison had the crowd laughing with some commentary about his chances as a young player facing off against veteran pro Arnaud Clement. Fans know not to take Harrison's jokes too seriously though, the up and comer has shown that he is a dedicated and focused pro.
This year's field has more Germans than any other nationality - making it pretty likely that two countrymen would face each other - wild card entry and former world No. 2 Tommy Haas will play No. 7 seed Michael Berrer.
Some other match ups to watch ...
- 2010 Finalist Olivier Rochus will face Australian Greg Jones. Rochus was a finalist in 2010, a semi-finalist in 2009 and a quarter-finalist in 2008. Following that pattern, his next result should be.... ?
- 6 foot, 10 inch tall Ivo Karlovic will bring his big serving game to Newport's grass courts against wild card Denis Kudla.
- World No. 62 and the youngest player in the top-100 Grigor Dimitrov will play Argentina's Brian Dabul, who was a semi-finalist in Newport last year.
Schedule of play will be announced on Sunday evening.
