New Directors & Life Trustees Appointed to ITHF Board
NEWPORT, R.I. -- October 7, 2013 - Executives from global corporations, a Tennis Hall of Famer, and successful WTA Tour and ATP World Tour players turned tennis industry leaders are among the nine individuals who have been elected to the Board of Directors of the International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum. The new board members were announced at the Hall of Fame's Annual Meeting in New York City in September.
The newly elected board members are: USTA First Vice President Katrina M. Adams, who won 21 doubles titles on the WTA Tour; Vijay Amritraj, a former world top-20 player and current lead anchor for ESPN Star Sports; David Bell, Chairman Emeritus of the Interpublic Group, Laurie Erlandson, a CPA formerly with Arthur Andersen & Co and now an active community leader; David B. Ford, President of DBF Associates and Senior Advisor to Gatemore Capital Management, LLC; David I. Goulden, President and COO of EMC® Corporation; Hall of Famer Charlie Pasarell, former owner of the BNP Paribas at Open at Indian Wells, who was the No.1 ranked player for the United States in 1967; Barbara van Beuren, Manager Director at Anbau Enterprises; and Stewart Wicht, President and CEO of Rolex Watch U.S.A., Inc.
In addition, longtime tennis industry supporters and Hall of Fame board members Rosalind Walter, Peggy Woolard, and John Reese have been named Life Trustees of the organization. All three have been active on the Board of Directors for well over 20 years, and currently serve on the Executive Committee. Walter is a dedicated philanthropist, active in tennis and other causes, including Channel 13/WNET, public television in New York City, and C.W. Post University in Long Island. Woolard is a longtime tennis supporter. She has also been an active director for the Delaware Art Museum for more than 30 years. Both Walter and Woolard have been influential in fostering significant growth in the museum at the International Tennis Hall of Fame, and currently serve on the Museum Committee. Reese is a past Chairman of the Board for the International Tennis Hall of Fame, and current Chair of the Board Nominating Committee. He is the Limited Managing Director for Lazard, a global financial advisory and asset management firm, and he serves as a member of the USTA Investment Committee.

The new members of the Board of Directors will begin their terms immediately. Each will serve the organization in various capacities ranging from oversight of the extensive museum to development of the Hall of Fame's annual ATP World Tour tennis tournament and Hall of Fame enshrinement programs, as well as in other important departments such as fundraising and marketing. Following are brief biographies of the new board members.
Katrina M. Adams is First Vice President of the United States Tennis Association (USTA). She currently serves on the USTA's Budget Committee, the International Committee, and the Compensation Committee. In addition, she is a member of the Board of Directors of USTA Serves and the ITF's Rules of Tennis Committee. In addition to her role on the USTA board, Adams works as an analyst for Tennis Channel and serves as Executive Director of the Harlem Junior Tennis and Education Program in New York City. She is also a contributor to Tennis magazine and tennis.com, providing instructional articles and videos. Adams competed on the WTA Tour for 12 years, achieving a career high ranking of No. 67 in singles and No. 8 in doubles, and winning 20 career doubles titles. Adams attended Northwestern University, where she was an NCAA All-American in 1986 and 1987 and, in 1987, became the first African-American NCAA doubles champion. A Chicago native, Adams has been inducted into the Northwestern Hall of Fame, and she was also inducted into the USTA Midwest Section Hall of Fame in 2005, the Chicago District Tennis Hall of Fame in 2008, and the Black Tennis Hall of Fame in 2012.
India's most celebrated tennis player Vijay Amritraj has been the Lead Anchor and Host for ESPN Star Sports since 1991. Based in Singapore, the venture operates 25 ESPN and STAR Sports branded television networks and 3 broadband sports networks throughout Asia, transmitting in 5 languages (English, Cantonese, Hindi, Korean and Mandarin). In addition, Amritraj serves as Chairman of Grey First Serve, Sri Lanka's leading advertising agency, Director of The Leela Group of Hotels in India, and he is a Brand Ambassador for Rolex and Jaguar Land Rover. As a player, Amritraj was ranked as high as world No. 16 in singles and world No. 23 in doubles, winning 16 singles titles and 13 doubles titles over the course of his career. He served as captain of the Indian Davis Cup for much of the late 1970s and 1980s, helping India reach the finals in 1974 and 1987. Amritraj was President of the ATP Tour Player Council from 1989 - 1992 and again in 1994, and he was unanimously elected to Honorary Membership of The All England Lawn Tennis Club at Wimbledon in 2001. Additionally, Amritraj has played an active role with the United Nations. He addressed the United Nations in May 1988, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Special Committee against apartheid in South Africa. He was awarded the prestigious Pierre Coubertin Award by the United Nations in Paris in November 1988 and is the only Asian to receive the honor. He was also appointed United Nations Messenger of Peace on February 9, 2001 by Secretary General Kofi Anan. In 2006, Amritraj founded The Vijay Amritraj Foundation, an international charity serving the destitute of India.
David Bell was elected to the Advertising Hall of Fame in 2007 and he is a longtime industry leader in marketing communications. He was the CEO of four industry companies including two of the biggest holding company groups. He was CEO of Knox Reeves when it was acquired by Bozell, and he helped build Bozell from a small US company to a top 10 global agency. He also served as CEO of Bozell Worldwide. When Bozell was acquired by True North Communications (NYSE), he became CEO. When True North was acquired by Interpublic Group (NYSE), he then became its CEO. He retired from Interpublic, and became a Senior Advisor to Google, where he stayed for four years. Bell then left Google to join Tim Armstrong (CEO) as an advisor to the AOL turnaround. In 2008, Bell joined Pegasus Capital Advisors where he helped create two unique agencies, Gyro and Creative Realities, which are now successful in the group called Slipstream, where Bell is the Chairman. He is the Past Chairman of the American Association of Advertising Agencies, The American Advertising Federation, the Advertising Educational Foundation and the Ad Council. He is the immediate Past Chairman of the National Forest Foundation, the AD Industry PAC, and the current Co-Chair of the Ad Council Advisory Committee. He also served as a Trustee of Macalester College and the Convent of the Sacred Heart School. He serves as a director of Warnaco and Lighting Science, both public companies. He also serves as a director to internet start ups Double Verify, Resonate, Media 6 Degrees, Your Tango, and Stylesight.
Laurie Erlandson was a CPA with Big 8 accounting and consulting firm Arthur Andersen & Co., later taking a finance position with Churchill Companies, both in Minneapolis, Minn. For the past 24 years, she has raised her children while taking an active role in her local community. Erlandson has been involved with a variety of organizations serving on the boards of the Shoreview Planning Commission, Shoreview Parks Commission, Historical Foundation, Mounds View School District 621 Foundation, Minnehaha Academy Environmental Committee, and area youth athletic associations. Erlandson ran the local girls basketball program for eight years while serving on their board. She has been the campaign manager for several local political campaigns. She is a lifelong tennis fan and currently plays competitively.
David B. Ford is President of DBF Associates and Senior Advisor to Gatemore Capital Management, LLC, a private wealth and institutional investment management firm. He is the Chairman of Princess Pictures, a family entertainment motion pictures and television company. Ford retired in 2003, after 33 years at The Goldman Sachs Group, where he was a Managing Director and co-head of Global Asset Management. Prior to that position he was a General Partner and Head of Fixed Income Sales at Goldman, Sachs & Co. Ford devotes substantial time to charitable and non-profit organizations. He is a member of the Board and Director/Trustee of the National Audubon Society, The New School University, the World Monuments Fund, The Redwood Library and Athenaeum, The Animal Medical Center, and The Preservation Society of Newport County. He formerly served as a Trustee of Florida State University and on the Board of Overseers of the Wharton School. Ford received his B.S. from Florida State University and an M.B.A. from The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.
David I. Goulden is President and COO of EMC Corporation, a global leader in enabling businesses and service providers to transform their operations and deliver IT as a service. As President and COO, Goulden has responsibility for overseeing EMC's business units as well as Global Sales and Customer Operations, Global Services, Global Marketing and G&A functions. He also serves as CFO and is based at EMC headquarters in Hopkinton, Mass. Goulden's 32-year career in the IT industry includes experience as a general manager with P&L responsibility for global businesses and as a leader of EMC globalsales, marketing, and business development. Previously, Goulden led EMC's customer operations for EMC worldwide, including Global Sales in the Americas, EMEA and Asia-Pacific theaters, Global Channels, and Alliances and Partners. Under Goulden's direction, EMC has rapidly transformed into a solutions-oriented technology company with a segmented go-to-market strategy and a partner-friendly selling model. Prior to that, he oversaw Marketing and New Business Development, where he led EMC's acquisition and integration of Legato, Documentum® and VMware®. Goulden has been a key leader in making M&A a core competency at EMC, having a role in more than 70 acquisitions since 2003 as well as business model innovations. Goulden joined EMC in July 2002 from Getronics, a global IT services provider. There, he was a member of the Board of Management, President and Chief Operating Officer, responsible for operations in the Americas and Asia Pacific, a role he assumed after Getronics acquired Wang Global in June 1999. Prior to the acquisition, he served in numerous executive, strategy, and marketing roles during a decade with Wang. Prior to joining Wang in 1990, Goulden was at Unisys for 10 years in a series of international sales and marketing positions. He holds a bachelor's degree in Physics from Durham University (England) and an Executive MBA from Cranfield School of Management (England). He is a tennis enthusiast, and plays regularly.
Charlie Pasarell is most recently best known as the past Tournament Director, Managing Partner, and former owner of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif., but his contributions as a tennis indusCharlie Pasarelltry leader have spanned all levels of the sport and have been a driving force in the growth of the tennis for more than 40 years. Originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico, Pasarell has been a longtime resident of California. In 1981, Pasarell took over as tournament director of the ATP World Tour event in the Coachella Valley of California and turned it into a two-week combined ATP and WTA event that is among the most exciting and important tournaments in the pro game. Under Pasarell's leadership, the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells has grown from 30,000 attendees to more than 370,000, and the event facilities have grown from one small stadium to a 24-court facility. In 1972, as tennis was in the pivotal transition to the Open Era, Pasarell banded together with a group of his fellow players to found the ATP, with the goal of giving players a voice in the structuring the ne w professional game. When the new ATP World Tour was established in 1990, Pasarell was elected by the tournaments to serve as their representative, and he was re-elected to the position every year for 20 consecutive years, until he retired. A focus of Pasarell's tennis career has always been finding ways to utilize the game to give back to the community. In 1969, Pasarell partnered with Arthur Ashe and Sheridan Snyder to launch National Junior Tennis League, which utilizes tennis a vehicle for teaching life skills and encouraging kids to stay in school. Today, the program continues to be the largest grassroots tennis program in the United Sates, with more than 600 chapters. Like many industry leaders, Pasarell got his start in tennis as a player. He achieved the No. 1 ranking in the United States in 1967, and he was an integral member of the championship United States Davis Cup Team in 1968. Pasarell was enshrined into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in July 2013.
Barbara van Beuren is Managing Director at Anbau Enterprises (AE). AE is a privately held residential real estate development firm based in New York City that focuses on the luxury new construction market. Van Beuren joined Anbau Enterprises in 2002. Prior to AE, she was a Founding Partner in a Manhattan design firm. She also worked in a variety of Philadelphia architecture offices. Aside from architecture, van Beuren spent four years in the non-profit world where she was Executive Director of her family's foundation, the van Beuren Charitable Foundation. Van Beuren earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Tufts University, a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania, and an M.B.A. from the Stern School of Business at New York University. In addition, she sits on the Penn Design Board of Overseers, the Board of Directors of Grow Smart RI, and she is President of the van Beuren Charitable Foundation. Outside of real estate and architecture, van Beuren's passion is her Portsmouth, R.I. grass fed beef farm. Aquidneck Farms manages a 180 head Angus herd on conservation land and sells grass fed beef and pastured poultry in local Rhode Island farmers markets and restaurants.
Stewart Wicht joined Rolex SA in Geneva, Switzerland in 1975. In charge of various overseas markets, he travelled extensively, notably in Asia and Oceania and he set up and managed the Intellectual Property Department. In 2011, he was named President and CEO of Rolex Watch U.S.A., Inc., where he leads a team of over 400 people nationwide. His professional and personal interests have led him to join the boards of industry and cultural organizations, including the American Swiss Foundation, Jewelers for Children, and Jewelers' Security Alliance. He graduated with honors from Ealing Technical College (now the University of West London) with a BA in Business Studies.
