Main Draw & First Round Order of Play Announced
Newport's top-3 seeds, Milos Raonic (3), John Isner (1), and Kei Nishikori (2) came out to the Newport Draw Party to kick things off with fans on Saturday. Click to see more pics from the party!
In the first match on Center Court tomorrow, wild card Jack Sock will face Igor Kunitsyn. Sock, who won the 2011 US Open Mixed Doubles title with Melanie Oudin, is the youngest player in the Newport field and the tournament will be his first since late March, as he has been out with an injury.
Several players who have found success in Newport before are also scheduled to play tomorrow, including Olivier Rochus, who was the runner up in 2011 and 2010, and a semifinalist in 2009. Rochus will face Japan's Go Soeda in tomorrow's match.
The second Center Court match will feature 2007 Newport runner up Nicolas Mahut versus Marco Chiudinelli. Following that match, Americans Donald Young, the No. 7 seed, and Michael Russell will compete, and closing out the day will be Ryan Harrison, currently ranked in the world top-50 and a member of the US Olympic team, versus Ruben Bemelmans of Begium.
In doubles action, local favorite James Cerratani, a Brown University alum and recent Wimbledon doubles quarterfinalist, will pair up with 2011 Newport doubles champion Matt Ebden, to take on Australians Lleyton Hewitt and Chris Guccione.
A change to the doubles draw was made today, with the withdrawal of No. 1 seeds, Bob & Mike Bryan. After a long run in both doubles and mixed doubles at Wimbledon, the pair decided that a week of rest was necessary so that they could best prepare for the upcoming Olympic games, where they will be part of Team USA.
Play begins at 11 am on Monday, and the updated Order of Play for the next day will be posted on tennisfame.com every evening. On Tuesday, there will be more first round action to look forward to when top players take to the Newport grass courts including John Isner, Kei Nishikori, and Milos Raonic!
