World Singles Ranking: 1
As a precocious teenager wielding her racquet with unshakable poise and precision, Tracy Austin ascended swiftly in the women’s game, winning a pair of US Open singles titles, achieving the coveted No. 1 world ranking, displaying a perspicacity seldom seen in such a young player. Austin seemed destined to earn all of her sport’s highest honors over and over again because her ground strokes were so deep and unerring and her desire to win was so insatiable. Injuries forced Austin into an early retirement, but she later became one of the premier tennis commentators.
