Audacity set Richard Williams apart from other esteemed players of his day. National Singles Champion in 1914 and 1916, twice victor in the U.S. Doubles Championships, he played on five victorious U.S. Davis Cup teams and served as captain of the team as well. He was ranked second in the United States for four consecutive years before his bold stroke play, volleying acumen and shot selection lifted him into the top position in 1916. But historians remember perhaps his greatest triumph of all, surviving the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.
