The Sutton sisters from California—Ethel, Florence, Violet, and May—were all formidable players. Ethel and Florence reached No. 2 in the United States, but May Sutton Bundy led the way as the first American to win at Wimbledon in 1905, a year after she won her own country’s national title. Her potent western forehand was her trademark shot. She was married to three time U.S. Doubles Champion Tom Bundy, and they raised “Dodo” Cheney, who won the Australian Championships in 1938.
