The first Californian to reach the finals of the U.S. National Women’s Championships in 1898, Marion Jones returned in 1899 to claim the title. She won again in 1902 and reached the final in 1903, the year she married Robert David Farquhar. In 1900, she became the first American woman to compete at Wimbledon, reaching the quarterfinals. Slender, fair and small, she had smooth and accurate ground strokes and preferred to remain stationed at the baseline, constructing points methodically and seldom making careless mistakes.
