Above and beyond anything else, Lesley Turner Bowrey was an elegant player with a ball striking capability and a consistency from the baseline few of her rivals could match. This Australian with the large heart and agile mind was a perennial member of the world’s top ten in the 1960s, securing a pair of French singles titles to go along with the eleven majors she took in doubles. After marrying compatriot Bill Bowrey in 1968, she went on to become a distinguished Fed Cup captain for her country.
