A doubles specialist of unmistakable craft, John Van Ryn won the Men’s Doubles at Wimbledon three straight years. He took two of those crowns with Wilmer Allison and notched the third with George Lott. In 1931, he was also successful with Lott at the French Championships. He was nearly invincible when he competed for the United States in Davis Cup, winning 22 of 24 encounters in an eight year stretch. Van Ryn was superb in the forecourt and most comfortable with a partner by his side, although he did reach No. 4 in the country in singles in 1931.
