As a prominent athlete at Yale University, Slocum performed more than capably in both tennis and football. Devoting himself with greater purpose to tennis after his college years, Slocum captured back-to-back U.S. Men’s Doubles Championships in 1888 and 1889, and took the U.S. Men’s Doubles Championships in 1889. After reaching the final of 1890 U.S. Championships, he altered his priorities and looked for other ways to serve the game largely. In 1892-93, he was President of the USNLTA.
