A charismatic player who inspired good sportsmanship with his dignified conduct on and off the court, Austin was twice a singles finalist at Wimbledon, and once at the French Championships. He was also twice the second-ranked player in the world during the 1930s, and a Davis Cup stalwart who captured 36 of 48 singles matches for Great Britain. He was perhaps most remembered, however, for his attire, becoming the first male player to wear shorts during match play.
