As one of the leading players of the late 1970s Guillermo Vilas was surrounded by luminaries like Björn Borg, Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe. Nevertheless, Vilas distinguished himself for a number of reasons. He was a thoughtful individual who wrote poetry, a left-hander known primarily for his heavy topspin, a deep thinker who benefited significantly from the wisdom of his coach Ion Tiriac. Tiriac helped Vilas develop a reliable sliced backhand, which was the key to his famous triumph over Connors in the 1977 U.S. Open final.
