A two-time U.S. Intercollegiate champion from Harvard, Fred Hovey put his fine ground strokes and competent volley to excellent use when he secured the U.S. Championships in 1895. That year, Hovey was ranked No. 1 in the United States. He was a member of the American top ten seven times. A two-time U.S. National Doubles Champions as well, he was capable of winning from both the baseline and at the net. His consistency and durability carried him doggedly through the years.
