During the middle of the twentieth century, when the vast majority of great American players hailed from California or Florida, along came Dick Savitt from New Jersey to win some high honors. In 1951, he was victorious at both the Australian Championships and Wimbledon. Tall and rangy, Savitt was an all-court player who possessed an immaculately produced backhand that was an essential tool in his success. From the back of the court, he could hold his own with anyone. He was a strikingly intense competitor and an earnest craftsman.
