When David Gray passed away in 1983, the game of tennis lost an invaluable citizen of the sport. As a correspondent for the Guardian from 1956 to 1976, he wrote with such elegance, intelligence and passion that colleagues could not help but be envious of how much command he had of his craft. Gray then went to work for the International Tennis Federation as a top administrator, campaigning vigorously and helping to bring about the restructuring of the Davis Cup and the return of tennis to the Olympic Games.
