Winning three of the four major titles over the course of a single season is a rare feat, but the Australian Ashley Cooper realized that distinction in 1958 when he swept the three grass court majors of that era-the Australian Championships, Wimbledon, and U.S. Nationals. Not a spectacular player in any respect, never known for an outstanding shot in his arsenal, Cooper simply kept coming forward, playing solid, percentage tennis, doing whatever it took to make his way through the tight corners of big matches.
