Newport Results

John Isner (USA)

One of the most exciting American players on the ATP World Tour, John Isner, will be the No. 1 seed at Newport. Last year, he captivated tennis fans around the world when he triumphed in the longest match in tennis history – an epic 11 hour and 5 minute battle at Wimbledon, versus Frenchman Nicolas Mahut. Following that record-setting match, both Isner and Mahut donated personal memorabilia (Isner’s racquet, Mahut’s racquet and apparel) from the match to be displayed in the Museum at the International Tennis Hall of Fame, where it is currently showcased in the Grand Slam Gallery. Last year, Isner  finished in Top 20 for first time with a personal-high 38 match wins. In addition, he led ATP World Tour in aces with 1,048 served – 113 of which were in the epic Wimbledon match.

Tommy Haas (GER)

Former world No. 2 Tommy Haas, who returned to play in April after 14 months out, will play in Newport as part of his comeback. Now in his 16th year on the ATP World Tour, Haas has been a dominant player for the majority of his career, achieving 11 top-50 season-ending finishes, including eight in the top 25. He’s no stranger to the comeback challenge either, having been named ATP World Tour Comeback Player of the Year in 2004, when he climbed to No. 17 after being out the year prior due to surgery.

This past month Harrison defeated three top-50 players at Indian Wells before exiting the tournament after an exciting Fourth Round match up with Roger Federer, which went to a tie-break in the first set.

Grigor Dimitrov (BUL)

Five months shy of his 20th birthday, Grigor Dimitrov finished 2010 as the highest-ranked teenager on the ATP World Tour, having improved from No. 287 to No. 106 during the year.  A Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships debutante, Dimitrov cracked the Top 100 this year after claiming his first Grand Slam tournament match win in January at the Australian Open. Dimitrov, who ended his junior career in 2008 by winning the boys’ singles titles at Wimbledon and the US Open, reached his first ATP quarterfinal this spring on clay at Munich, where he defeated former Australian Open runner-up Marcos Baghdatis.

Ryan Sweeting, a rookie in the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, is one of the early contenders for this year’s ATP Newcomer of the Year honors. He captured his first ATP title by winning the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships in April and, one month later, rose to No. 65 in the world. Sweeting also was a quarterfinalist at Delray Beach in February, earning the first Top 25 victory of his career when he upset Sam Querrey in the second round.

Olivier Rochus (BEL)

The pattern Olivier Rochus has developed in playing the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships the past two years suggests that he will win this year’s event. Upon his debut in 2009, he advanced to the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Rajeev Ram. Last year, Rochus breezed to the final, where he fell in three tight sets to Mardy Fish. During his 13-year career, Rochus has captured two ATP World Tour singles titles, the most recent five years ago on clay at Munich. The biggest championship in Rochus’ portfolio is the Roland Garros men’s doubles title he won (with Xavier Malisse) in 2004.

Mahut was singles runner-up in 2007, capping a stretch of winning 10 of 13 matches on grass, including a straight-sets upset of Rafael Nadal at Queen’s Club, London.

Returning to the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, where he made his ATP World Tour debut in 2003, Brown added to the legend of the “Casino Curse,” defeating top seed Sam Querrey to reach his second ATP quarterfinal of the year. Brown won his first Grand Slam tournament match at the US Open last year and, three weeks later, captured his first ATP title, taking the doubles crown (with Rogier Wassen) in Metz, France. Within the following month, Brown, born to a Jamaican father and German mother, began playing under the German flag.

Before this week, Ivo Karlovic had not played the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships since 2006, when he was forced to retire from his first-round match because of a knee injury. On the comeback trail now from an Achilles injury, Karlovic is a better player than he was then, having risen to No. 14 in the world in the summer of 2008 on the strength of winning the pre-Wimbledon event at Nottingham for the second year in a row and reaching the semifinals of the ATP Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati, where he defeated Roger Federer in the round of 16. The following year, Karlovic was a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon, defeating Top 10 players in back-to-back matches for the first time in his career. Karlovic’s serve, clocked at a record 156 mph in March, gives him a chance against anyone, but it is particularly potent on grass.

It was the first time Bogomolov had defeated anyone in the Top 5 since his first year as a pro, when he beat then-No. 3 Tommy Haas in the opening round at 2002 Los Angeles. The Miami victory helped pave the way for Bogomolov’s ascent to a career-best No. 84 by the French Open, his first time in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament since the 2006 Australian Open. But his play at Wimbledon last season was a bigger contributor to his leap into the Top 100, and it speaks volumes about his potential for excelling in his inaugural appearance in the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships. Kamke, who advanced to the third round at 2010 Wimbledon, was the only qualifier to get that farand, at No. 126, the lowest-ranked player.
